The Papers of Brooklyn Borough Presidents (1940-1970), 1925-1971 1940-1967.

This collection consists of alphabetically arranged subject fields created by John Cashmore, continued by Abe Stark, or created by Abe Stark. Lloyd Herzka was Mr. Cashmore's professional secretary throughout the borough presidents' tenure and he likely served Mr. Hayes briefly as well as Mr. Stark evident by the maintenance of files created under Cashmore. Although the collection is arranged alphabetically, nearly 60 document types have been identified, including: Acts, applications, campaign material, censuses, contracts, film reels, laws, maps, petitions, photographs, plans, posters, press kits, proclamations, proposals, reports, speeches, statements telegrams, transcripts. Of interest to researchers may be material about New York during the War Years (1941-1945); the Home Relief Bureau (the predecessor of welfare); the many emotional personal appeals to Mr. Cashmore for aid and assistance; files that relate to Senator John F. Kennedy's visits to Brooklyn as well to his assassiantion, and how Brooklyn responded; numerous signed letters by notable Americans including President Truman, Governor Dewey, Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert F. Wagner, a host of politicians and high ranking religious and community leaders; the mid-1960s plans, sketches, and literature relating to the then nonexistent World Trade Center. Please note: the collection holds no material written or signed by President John F. Kennedy. The oldest document in this collection is a campaign "calling card" of Mr. Cashmore's when he was 29 years old. It bears a black and white photo portrait of the yong Cashmore. In 1960, John Cashmore received this relic from an old friend (see file C32).
